It All Starts With the Right Turfgrass Selection

The most important aspect of developing and maintaining an attractive and problem-free turf begins with choosing a grass variety that has the qualities you desire and is adapted to the area where it is to be grown. That’s why more and more architects, contractors, superintendents, landscapers and consultants are specifying:
Missouri "Blue Tag" Certified Turfgrass.

Quality landscaping requires quality turf and "Blue tag"
Missouri Certified Turfgrass is quality.

What does the "Blue Tag" on certified turfgrass mean?
- True to variety.
- No noxious weeds observed in mature sod.
- Is grown under rigid specifications and are inspected by field inspectors regularly.
- Is the standard of excellence.
- Is the highest quality sod available for that special landscape where only the finest will do.

Missouri Certified Turfgrass Protocol

KNOWN SOURCE - DOCUMENTED HISTORY
Turfgrass varieties produced under the certification rules must originate with a qualified foundation seed program approved by the certification agency. All planting stock must have a recorded pedigree history, similar to the pedigree records maintained on thoroughbred racehorses. This system is extremely important for vegetatively produced grasses.

CAREFUL LAND SELECTION
Careful selection and maintenance of production fields is a must. Maintaining consistent varieties can only be achieved by keeping fields free of weeds and contamination from other grass varieties and plant species.

FIELD SAMPLES AND GROW-OUTS
Grass samples are routinely collected from all production fields and are grown for comparisons with a known check sample to assure correct variety identification.

FIELDS ARE INSPECTED FOR:
- Presence of Other Varieties
- Presence of Other Crops
- Noxious Weeds
- Adequate Isolation From Other Fields

CERTIFICATES
Each shipment of grass produced under the protocols of this program will be accompanied by an official certificate. This certificate will state the kind and variety of grass harvested, field number, date of harvest and the producer’s name and address. The certificate will bear the signature of the producer’s quality control person who is responsible for the genetic purity of the grass. The certificate is the purchaser’s assurance of receiving a product produced under the certification protocols.
